Hu Bo’s ‘An Elephant Sitting Still’ follows a day in the lives of four fictional characters living in a gloomy city located in Northeastern China, a region which has only declined during China’s rapid rise. Through the dispiriting setting and the main characters’ desperate situations the movie shows us a darker side to Chinese society where, to many, it seems like opportunities for personal and economic development are abundant.
